My First Gurudev: A Tribute to Late Shri B. K. Upadhyay Ji Barabanki

Introduction

The journey of a disciple begins with the guidance of a Guru, and for me, that journey was shaped by the profound teachings of the Late Shri B. K. Upadhyay Ji from Barabanki U.P. A man of immense wisdom and spiritual depth, he was not only my first Gurudev but also a father figure who guided me with unparalleled love and care. This tribute is a reflection of the immense impact he had on my life and the spiritual path he illuminated for me.

The Early Life of Shri B. K. Upadhyay Ji

Shri B. K. Upadhyay Ji hailed from Devariya, a small town in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. His early life was marked by academic excellence, particularly in Mathematics, where he was a topper at Gorakhpur University. His intellectual prowess led him to a distinguished career in the Indian Air Force, stationed at the Gorakhpur Station, where he served as a mechanical and maintenance engineer.

Before his transformative encounter with Devraha Baba, Shri Upadhyay Ji was a devoted follower of the revered Guru Goraksha Nath Peeth, a spiritual lineage known for its emphasis on yoga and meditation. His deep connection with Guru Goraksha Nath Peeth laid the foundation for his spiritual journey, which would later be profoundly influenced by Devraha Baba.

A Spiritual Awakening with Devraha Baba

The turning point in Shri Upadhyay Ji’s life came when he met Devraha Baba, the ageless Siddha Yogi, at the Ghaat of Varanasi, near the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Temple. This meeting was nothing short of destiny. Devraha Baba, recognizing the spiritual potential in Shri Upadhyay Ji, called him by his name, gave him Deeksha and instructed him to meditate in the dense jungles of Tarapeeth. For a few years, Shri Upadhyay Ji immersed himself in deep meditation, emerging as a highly accomplished Tantrik and Sadhak with profound spiritual insights and left his job at the Air Force to start his spiritual life till the end.

A Guiding Light in My Life

I had the immense fortune of meeting Shri Upadhyay Ji when I was just 16 years old. He took me under his wings, not only as a disciple but as a son. His teachings, rooted in the ancient Vedas, were imparted with a depth of understanding that only a true Guru possesses. Under his guidance, I was introduced to the profound wisdom of the scriptures and mantra deeksha, and the spiritual path that he illuminated for me has been my guiding light ever since.

A Renowned Tantrik and Spiritual Leader

Shri B. K. Upadhyay Ji’s reputation as a Tantrik was well-known. His expertise in Vedic rituals and Tantric practices made him a sought-after figure in spiritual circles. His most notable contribution was when he was called upon to perform the last rites of the Late Smt. Indira Gandhi, the assassinated Prime Minister of India. With the recitation of the Gayatri Mantra and full Vedic rituals, he ensured that the final rites were conducted with the highest level of sanctity.

Devraha Baba: My Sadhguru

Central to Shri Upadhyay Ji’s spiritual journey was his Guru, Devraha Baba, a mystic and Siddha Yogi who lived by the Yamuna river in Mathura. Known as the “ageless Yogi,” Devraha Baba was a hermit who resided atop a wooden platform, blessing devotees with his feet. His influence extended across the nation, attracting everyone from common villagers to the most powerful political leaders of the time.

Devraha Baba’s teachings transcended religious boundaries, offering spiritual guidance to all who sought it. His blessings were sought by political figures such as Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi, especially during times of national significance.

Conclusion

As I reflect on the journey that began with my first Gurudev, Late Shri B. K. Upadhyay Ji from Barabanki, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude. His teachings, his wisdom, and his unwavering guidance have shaped my spiritual path in ways that continue to resonate within me. It is with deep respect and love that I share this tribute, honouring the legacy of a great man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment.

These pictures capture the essence of the spiritual journey I embarked upon with Shri Upadhyay Ji whom I always called “Guru Ji”, each one a testament to the profound impact he had on my life. May his blessings continue to guide all those who seek the path of righteousness and spiritual growth.

My Sadhguru: The Timeless Devraha Baba

Introduction

In the vast expanse of Indian spirituality, few figures are as enigmatic and revered as Devraha Baba, my Sadhguru. Known as the “Ageless Yogi,” Devraha Baba was a Siddha Yogi saint who spent his life in deep meditation and spiritual practice beside the Yamuna river in Mathura. His life, shrouded in mystery and miracles, continues to inspire countless devotees and seekers on the spiritual path.

The Early Life and Mystique of Devraha Baba

Devraha Baba’s early life remains largely unknown, adding to the mystique that surrounds him. It is believed that in the first half of the 20th century, he visited Maiel, a town near Salempur in Uttar Pradesh, where he began living atop a machan—a high platform made of wooden logs—on the banks of the Sarayu River. The local people, recognizing his spiritual stature, began calling him Devraha Baba, with “Baba” being an honorific for saints.

His spiritual journey took him to various parts of India, where he became known by different names in different states. In Ganjam, Odisha, at the Purneswari Maa Tara Tarini Shakti Peetha, locals revered him as Chamatkari Baba, a testament to the miracles he performed during his visits there. Even today, the priests of Maa Tara Tarini Shakti Peetha recount the miraculous events associated with Devraha Baba’s presence.

The Hermit of Vrindavan

Eventually, Devraha Baba made Vrindavan his home, settling on the banks of the Yamuna River. There, he resumed his life atop a wooden machan, where he lived for the rest of his years. This high platform became a symbol of his detachment from the material world, allowing him to maintain his spiritual focus while offering blessings to those who sought his guidance.

Devraha Baba’s way of life was simple yet profound. He wore a small deerskin and lived with minimal physical comforts, embodying the essence of asceticism. His semi-naked body was hidden from devotees by a barricade of wooden planks, and he only descended from his machan to bathe in the sacred river. Despite this reclusive lifestyle, his spiritual influence was far-reaching.

A Guide to All: From Paupers to Politicians

Devraha Baba was not confined by the narrow boundaries of caste, community, or social status. He was a spiritual guide to all, from the poorest villagers to the most powerful politicians. People from all walks of life would wait for hours, sometimes even days, to have a glimpse or darshan of this ageless Yogi.

Among those who sought his blessings were prominent political figures, including Indira Gandhi, Buta Singh, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi. Devraha Baba’s influence was such that political leaders would visit him on the eve of elections, seeking his divine blessings for success. His spiritual guidance was believed to transcend the worldly affairs of politics, providing solace and strength to those in positions of power.

The Ageless Yogi

Devraha Baba’s title as the “Ageless Yogi” stemmed from the belief that he had lived for over a century, possibly even longer. His followers and devotees believed that he had mastered the art of extending his life through deep spiritual practices, making him a living embodiment of the timeless wisdom of the Yogis.

Despite his advanced age, Devraha Baba’s energy and spiritual presence were undiminished. His blessings, often given with his feet, were considered to be a powerful conduit of divine grace. Devotees would line up to receive his touch, believing that it could heal ailments, remove obstacles, and bestow spiritual upliftment.

Conclusion

The life of Devraha Baba is a testament to the power of spiritual dedication and the timeless nature of true wisdom. As my Sadhguru, his teachings and blessings have been a guiding force in my spiritual journey. His legacy continues to inspire countless seekers, reminding us that the path to enlightenment is one of simplicity, humility, and unwavering devotion.

Devraha Baba’s life, though shrouded in mystery, is a beacon of light for all who seek to transcend the limitations of the material world and connect with the divine. His teachings live on, offering a path of spiritual awakening to all who are willing to listen and learn.

My Spiritual Journey in Gorakhpur: A Blessing from Guru Gorakshnath and Lord Shiva

In the early years of my professional career, I found myself stationed in Allahabad. However, in 2002-2003, I was transferred to Gorakhpur for a few months—a period that would become a pivotal chapter in my spiritual journey. During my time in Gorakhpur, I had the profound honour of meeting Yogi Adityanath, who is now the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. It was also during this period that I frequently visited the revered Gorakshanath Peeth for darshan, where I felt the divine presence of Guru Gorakhnath and Lord Shiva, the Mahadev.

The Gorakhnath Math: A Hub of Spiritual Power

The Gorakhnath Math, also known as Gorakhnath Temple or Shri Gorakhnath Mandir, is not just a temple; it is a spiritual powerhouse that stands as a beacon of the Nath monastic order. The Math is dedicated to the mediaeval saint Gorakshanath, a yogi from the 11th century CE who travelled extensively across India and authored numerous texts that form a part of the Nath Sampradaya’s spiritual canon. The Nath tradition itself was founded by Guru Matsyendranath, who is revered as the spiritual predecessor of Gorakshanath.

Situated in the heart of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, the Gorakhnath Math is spread across a large expanse of land and serves as the cultural and spiritual hub of the city. The temple is not just a place of worship but also a centre for various cultural and social activities that continue to shape the spiritual landscape of the region.

The Rich History of Gorakhpur and Its Spiritual Significance

Gorakhpur, the city that takes its name from Gorakhnath, has a rich history deeply rooted in Hindu culture and spirituality. The Gorakhnath Mandir, built in honour of the saint, stands on the sacred ground where Gorakshanath performed his intense spiritual practices or Sādhanā.

The region of Gorakhpur encompasses several districts, including Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Deoria, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, and parts of the Nepal Terai. This area, often referred to as Gorakhpur Janapada, has long been a significant centre of Hindu culture. Historically, Gorakhpur was a part of the ancient kingdom of Magadha, one of the sixteen Mahajanapadas in the 6th century BCE. The region has been ruled by various dynasties, including the Maurya, Shunga, Kushan, Gupta, and Harsha dynasties, each leaving its mark on the spiritual heritage of the area.

The Gorakhnath Mandir has endured through the ages, facing various challenges, including attacks that sought to diminish its spiritual influence. Yet, the temple has stood resilient, continuing to be a sanctuary of spiritual power and devotion.

(in the photo is Aacharya Shree Bala Guru Swami of Varanasi, who took seeds of Rudraksha to Nepal 1st time some 80-85 years ago)

Religious Activities and the Legacy of Guru Gorakhnath

Today, the Gorakhnath Math remains a vital religious institution, not only in Gorakhpur but also in Nepal, where a second Gorakhnath temple is located in the district of Gorkha. The Gorakhpur temple is said to contain the samadhi shrine and gaddi (prayer seat) of Guru Gorakhnath, making it a central point of Hindu religious activity in the region.

One of the most significant events at the Gorakhnath Math is the annual Makar Sankranti festival when thousands of devotees gather to offer khichdi to Gorakhnath Baba. The tradition is so deeply ingrained that even the King of Nepal would occasionally visit the temple during this auspicious time when he was alive.

The Gorakhnath Math has a wide following, not only in eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Terai regions of Nepal but also among the Nath groups across India. The monastic order, following the principles laid down by Guru Gorakhnath, is dedicated to the service of humanity and spiritual upliftment.

Yogi Adityanath: The Present Mahant of Gorakhnath Math

The spiritual lineage of the Gorakhnath Math is carried forward by its present Mahant, Yogi Adityanath, who was appointed to this sacred position on 14 September 2014. He succeeded his Guru Mahant Avaidyanath, who passed away on 12 September 2014. Mahant Avaidyanath was laid to rest beside his Guru, Digvijay Nath, in the Gorakhnath Temple, thus continuing the unbroken chain of spiritual leadership.

Conclusion: A Journey of Divine Blessings

Reflecting on my time in Gorakhpur, I realise that everything I have written and accomplished for Rudraalaya.com is a result of the blessings I received from Guru Gorakshnath and Lord Shiva. My visits to the Gorakshanath Peeth some 22 years back and the spiritual experiences I had there have shaped my understanding of the divine and continue to guide me in all my endeavours. The wisdom of the Nath tradition, coupled with the grace of Mahadev, has been a beacon of light on my spiritual path, illuminating the way forward in both my personal and professional life.

My Spiritual Journey: From Shri B. K. Upadhyay Ji to Neem Karoli Baba

The Loss of My First Guru

In 2012, the passing of my first guru, Shri B. K. Upadhyay Ji marked the beginning of a particularly challenging phase in my life. I had relocated from Allahabad to Gurugram in 2010, and Guru ji had visited me once in Delhi in 2011, accompanied by his son Bharat Upadhyay. His presence was a beacon of hope during difficult times.

In 2004, I endured a severe leg injury in a road accident. My leg was crushed in a truck accident, and doctors in Lucknow were uncertain about the outcome. During my hospitalisation, Guruji visited me, and assured me of my recovery, and his blessings played a crucial role in the miraculous healing of my leg.

Visions of Neem Karoli Baba

After Guruji’s departure in the year 2012, I experienced a tumultuous period of highs and lows. It was during this time that I began having visions of an elderly man whose identity eluded me. These visions intensified between 2019 and 2020, and it was only then that I realised this revered figure was Neem Karoli Baba.

Neem Karoli Baba (c. 1900 – 11 September 1973), also known as Maharaj-ji, was a renowned Hindu Guru and devotee of Hanuman. He is celebrated for his spiritual teachings and miraculous deeds, especially among Western followers, including prominent figures like Ram Dass and Krishna Das.

The Life of Neem Karoli Baba

Neem Karoli Baba was born Lakshman Narayan Sharma in a Brahmin family in Akbarpur, Uttar Pradesh. After an early marriage and settling into family life, he left everything to become a wandering sadhu in 1958. He became known by various names, including Lakshman Das and Handi Wallah Baba. His life was marked by significant events, such as his intervention with the Indian railways to establish a station in Neem Karoli village.

Throughout his life, Neem Karoli Baba wandered extensively across Northern India, establishing ashrams in Kainchi and Vrindavan. His teachings, based on bhakti yoga and selfless service (seva), continue to inspire thousands. The Kainchi Dham ashram, built in 1964, has become a major pilgrimage site, attracting devotees from around the world.

Formal Guru Deeksha in 2020

In 2020, I, along with my mother, formally took Guru Deeksha from Pandit Vinod Kumar Gautam Ji. Pandit Vinod Kumar Gautam Ji, a disciple of Dr. Naray Dutt Shri Mali Ji, has been a guiding light in my spiritual journey. Under his mentorship, I practised Tantra and Mantra Sadhna for two continuous years. It was through Pandit Vinod Kumar Gautam Ji that I was introduced to Neem Karoli Baba, who had previously sent me to him.

Pandit Vinod Kumar Gautam Ji’s teachings in Tantra and Mantra Sadhna have been instrumental in deepening my spiritual practice, and his introduction to Neem Karoli Baba has significantly enriched my spiritual journey. This formal initiation marked a new chapter in my quest for spiritual growth and understanding.

Conclusion

My spiritual journey has been profoundly shaped by the blessings and guidance of Shri B. K. Upadhyay Ji, Neem Karoli Baba, and Pandit Vinod Kumar Gautam Ji. Each phase of this journey, from the challenges I faced to the divine visions and teachings that followed, has been a testament to the enduring power of spiritual guidance and devotion.

About The Founder – Shri Sujeet Samar Bahadur Singh Ji

In the tranquil lands of Uttar Pradesh, India, where the legacy of bravery intertwines with spiritual depth, his forefathers “The Baiswadas” and “The Trilokchandi Baiswada Rajputs” known as Suryavanshi from the lineage of Lord Ram, our founder, Shri Sujeet Samar Bahadur Singh Ji was born to Hindu Trilokchandi Rajput Family of “Late Samar Bahadur Bans Lochan Singh Ji” and “Sreemati Kiran Ram Chandra Singh Ji” in Mumbai in 1979.

Backed with a beautiful story of his parents coming from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and their history from his great grandfather came from Raebareli Baiswada, known as Suryavanshi from the lineage of Lord Ram son’s Luv & Kush and His mother great grandfathers came from Mata Sarada Devi, Maihar Temple of Satna, from the lineage of great warriors Alha Udal in Rajasthan

His story is not just a journey through the spiritual landscapes of India but a testament to the power of faith, devotion, and the eternal blessings of Lord Shiva, Shri Mahakaaleshwara. Shri Sujeet Singh’s spiritual voyage commenced under the tender guidance of his first guru, his mother, “Sreemati Kiran Singh Ji” who introduced him to the Hindu Vedic ways of Pooja and Sanskar Deeksha, as done in typical Hindu Rajput Kshatriya families embedding in him the seeds of devotion and righteousness.

His father, the Late Shri Samar Bahadur Bans Lochan Singh Ji, a fervent devotee of Lord Shiva and the sacred Shree Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, instilled in Sujeet a profound affection and reverence for Lord Shiva from his early childhood living in Indore and Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh in India.

This bond deepened with every visit to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, igniting in him an unshakeable faith in Lord Shiva’s Omnipotence. The lineage of Sujeet traces back to the noble clan of Raja Trilokchand, descending from Raja Abhay Chandra of Uttar Pradesh who established the Kingdom of Baiswara. Today Baiswara includes parts of the modern-day districts of Unnao, Raebareli, and Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh India known as Suryavanshi’s Kashatriya Rajputs from the lineage of Lord Ram son’s Luv & Kush.

Raja Trilokchand was a king of Baiswada who built a 25-pinnacled temple between 1751 and 1755. Raja Trilokchand was also one of the first to rebel against religious persecution by the Delhi Sultans.

This rich heritage imbued in him (Sujeet Samar Bahadur Singh Ji) a quest for spiritual enlightenment and seeking truth from a tender age. His relentless pursuit led him to his first Guru, Late Shri B.K. Upadhyaya Ji, a disciple of the revered Great Indian Saint “Shri Devraha Baba Ji”. The prophecy that a boy would be born by the blessings of Baba Gorakhnath, as foretold to his mother by a saint in Mumbai and echoed by an astrologer from Ujjain after his birth, who forecasted he would become a great spiritual seeker, further shaped his spiritual journey, guiding him towards his true calling.

Sujeet’s path was illuminated by many revered gurus and spiritual guides across various sects, culminating in his meeting with Pandit Vinod Kumar Gautam Ji with whom he took Guru Deeksha. Later he met Dr. Mahitosh Mukherjee a devotee who left his medical career to serve at the “Maa Kamakhya Temple, Mata Kela Devi and Maa Rajarajeshwari temples”

Under Pandit Vinod Kumar Gautam Ji’s guidance (Deeksha), and inspired by the teachings of his LateSadhguru Dr. Narayan Dutt Shrimali ji”, a luminary in tantra, astrology and spiritual practices, Sujeet embraced his spiritual destiny. He was bestowed deeksha by Guru Shree Vinod Kumar Gautam Ji, a devotee of Shree Kedarnath Jyotirlinga, further enriching Sujeet’s spiritual insights and his journey till he attained a few siddhis under him. With his due permission and insight, he was asked to build Rudraalaya.com

Believing firmly in the teachings of his Sadhguru, Dr Narayan Dutt Shrimali ji, who envisioned his disciples as “torchbearers of human society leading others from the darkness of Kaliyuga to the light of Satyuga”, Sujeet dedicated himself to his spiritual practice and building this ecosystem name Rudraalaya.com with his guiding lights order and awareness he generated while meditating continuously for 18+ months alone in silence the name “Rudraalaya” was echoed in his subconsciousness when he heard this name for the very first time.

About Us

Rudraalaya.com has been a divine blessing of Lord Shiva to create a platform to provide Nepali Rudraksha to all the spiritual meditators who manifest their energy and “kamana” (wishes) via a sacred bead of rudraksha “as known Rudraksha are formed from the divine tears of lord shiva”

Rudraalaya envisions creating a global platform to provide spiritual rudraksha beads and building a vibrant community of meditators where knowledge, practices, and experiences are shared freely among others for every individual’s spiritual growth and enlightenment seekers to find the right guidance.

We see ourselves as custodians of a tradition that dates back millennia and hundreds of centuries, tasked with the responsibility of creating awareness in today’s age without compromising its sanctity and authenticity.

Through the dissemination of comprehensive, research-backed information and the provision of genuine, authentic, high-quality products, we aim to demystify the spiritual and health benefits of Rudraksha beads, Natural Gemstones and other Vedic spiritual tools, making them accessible to people across the globe, irrespective of their geographical location or cultural background.

Our vision is rooted in the belief that spiritual well-being is an integral part of overall health and happiness. By facilitating access to the vedic literature, mantras, tantras (tools) and teachings of ancient Hindu Spiritual wisdom, we hope to inspire individuals to embark on their journeys of self-discovery and spiritual awakening.

In doing so, Rudraalaya as per the teaching of our Sadhguru “Nikhileshwaranand” aspires to be a beacon of light in times of darkness, guiding people towards a path of peace, fulfilment, and unity with the divine. Through our efforts, we wish to contribute to a global shift towards a more conscious, mindful, and spiritually engaged society, where the values of compassion, reverence for life, and environmental stewardship are paramount.

From experiencing meditations that transport users to the Himalayan Deep energies of Mount Kailash “The Magical Mountain” holy abode of Lord Shiva with the guidance of a spiritual seeker our founder Shri Sujeet Samar Bahadur Singh ji, we are excited about the potential of modern website and e-commerce technology which enables the reach of our ancient and historical Hindu wisdom and knowledge of Matra Deeksha, Rudraksha Deeksha, Hindu cultural significance, festivals and traditions across the Globe via rudraalaya.com

We envision a world where every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of Rudraksha beads and the rich spiritual heritage of Hinduism.

Certificate of Origin with Moneyback Assurance

We do not issue any lab certificates or X-ray reports until requested or pre-built and capped beads like (Siddha Mala or Kantha). The reason to do so is that we believe every owner of the rudraksha should feel and be aware of the natural form of the rudraksha bead and should be able to experience the touch and feel of the bead before wearing it. Before wearing a rudraksha you should check that the lines should be clear and complete head to tail (Mukhi), the colour and texture should be reddish brown (Nepali rudraksha) and unpolished and the rudraksha should not have any cracks or should not be broken or damaged (preferably unoiled), every Nepali Rudraksha has a natural hole in the centre. Having these features as shown in our pictures you see the true form of the Rudraksha. We recommend for all expensive rudraksha above $1000, you should get it certified by a gemological lab such as IGLI (International Gemological Laboratories & Institute) if you request we can do this at an additional charge however, if post-purchase any lab certifies that the sold rudraksha is not authentic Nepali rudraksha, we will return full money along with the charges of Lab Test upon giving us original Lab Test Report with Invoice, Lab Details and the Rudraksha Bead undamaged or unworn or modified from the original form as sold. (Please refer to our return and exchange policy)
